Yet another airport. Another airplane. (Layover in Ethiopia)
But it’s the last leg. We are at least on the correct continent. It’s really
happening!! It’s exciting.
13 hours on the flight across the ocean. I gave some serious
thanks to the travel gods for letting me sit by friends/people I know.
Definitely made the flight more comfortable. But regardless of who you sit by,
it’s never comfortable to sit in a small space for so long. Yeah, I slept. I
ate. I got up and stretched a few times. I even watched a couple very strange
movies. But sleep isn’t that great. Food isn’t terrific. Regardless – we are
here!! And it’s about to become an eye-opening experience.
So far, airports are airports. The people are a little
different. The smells are a little strange. The bathrooms aren’t the same. But
mostly it’s just an airport and you sit and wait. Less things/places to eat and
nothing to actually do . . . Being a mostly blonde white girl, I stood out. But
I’m also wearing comfy traveling clothes and packing a bunch of stuff, so I
would stand out anyway.
There’s a group of 8 girls that are traveling together. Some
single, some not. But we still started, after seeing some hot guys on our first
flight, that ‘we are single and gonna mingle.’ We are gonna meet some hotties
and be friendly. None of that is likely to happen, but we can joke about it.
And check out any eye candy that we might come across. Hehe!
Mom made me some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. They were a
hit!! Everyone loved them. And they were the perfect morning snack while
waiting. And don’t’ worry, dad. Even after everyone was whipping out phones to
text or take pictures, mine is still off. The battery out, just to be safe. And
it will stay that way!
The plane was two hours delayed – weather or something. This
is one of the few times that I’ll thank the technology gods. We zoned out
watching a couple TV episodes that we brought with us. “Justified” if anyone is
interested in watching it.
Sometime around 7 pm –
local timeApparently the last flight also sat, with us boarded, for an hour and a half. I didn’t notice. I was falling asleep before we boarded and was out before they closed the door. I woke up just enough to lean my seat back. My friend had to wake me up as we were landing so I could put my seat ‘in the upright position’ and I still slept till we pulled up to the gate. I was tired…..
Entebbe, Uganda in Africa was the first destination. We
stayed at the Entebbe Backpacker’s Inn. Not bad. A good way to get into the
groove of change…. Luckily I was in a room with only 2 other girls and our own
bathroom. Limited power (outages are regular) and even more limited internet
(didn’t always have it even when power was on).
Welcome to Uganda!! Let’s break out the mosquito
nets and crawl into bed.
