Jackfruit!!

What a wonderful treat that our friend Emmy brought over to us one morning. It's a local fruit called Jack fruit.
This fruit is one of his favorites and while in the market, he bought some for us. Such a wonderful surprise. Thanks, Emmy!!
Anna-Claire and I had wondered what the fruit was called as we always saw people selling it. We even see it growing on the tree.
It's a very strange sort of fruit - compared to any I'm used to. The large seed is inside the part that is to be eaten, and there's also some extra fiber to work around. It's incredibly sticky!! The part that is around the fruit is almost like glue. So either eat it with plastic around your fingers (which makes it hard to get the fruit) or just plan on trying to wash it off good after.... :-)
Jack fruit, after the first bite, reminded us vaguely of a tropical starburst flavor. But then, maybe not. It's an interesting, not in a bad way, sort of texture. I would have to say that I didn't LOVE it, but I didn't dislike it either. Maybe I will try it again, just to be sure.
One thing I'd have to say is, I will not store it uncovered in a fridge again! It tends to have a not-so-nice smell once cut open. That is alright tho. Smells are something to get used to.
